Seine Entstehungsgeschichte beginnt im Jahr 1917, als die Alliierten mit der S.E.5a und den SPAD-J\u00e4gern die Lufthoheit errungen hatten. Um dem entgegenzuwirken, forderte die deutsche Seite die Flugzeughersteller auf, im Januar 1918 Prototypen f\u00fcr einsitzige Kampfflugzeuge zur Bewertung vorzustellen. Das Design mit der besten Gesamtleistung w\u00fcrde einen Produktionsauftrag erhalten. Der Fokker D.VII war der Gewinner und erhielt einen ersten Auftrag \u00fcber 400 Maschinen. Insgesamt wurden 3.300 DVII produziert und \u00fcber 700 waren nach Kriegsende im Einsatz.
